The Challenge

A global company building automated warehouse systems needed to validate LiDAR and camera sensors for safe human interaction, but couldn’t find a vendor that met their strict requirements. To solve this, they decided to build a modular, human-safe, in-house sensor lab from the ground up, capable of rigorous testing to IEC 61508 SIL 3 standards. To move quickly and reduce technical risk, they turned to Goddard ACE to embed expert mechanical and electrical engineers directly on-site.

Our Solution

Through Goddard ACE, our engineers became an extension of the client’s team. The mechanical group designed mobile, reconfigurable fixtures to support fast prototyping. The electrical team implemented a custom safety system, which included an HMI, safety PLCs, VLAN configuration, and lighting simulation for seamless and safe lab operation. Together, they delivered two fully functional labs capable of real-time sensor validation, modular scalability, and integrated data capture, while overcoming tight timelines, evolving requirements, and complex cross-platform networking challenges.
